AA/ DST Spotlight-
Star Trek Minimates
Series 1 (3")

Photobucket

Manufacturer: Art Asylum
Item Name: Star Trek Minimates Series 1 (3")

Photobucket

Art Asylum released this series of Star Trek Minimates way back in 2002. They were available in these nifty hard plastic tubes (I seem to have misplaced my Mugatu)...

Photobucket

... or on standard cardbacks. The "Trouble With Tribbles" Kirk was only available in the carded packaging. And it looks like I've managed to lose my carded McCoy as well.

Photobucket

The Rundown: Man, it's hard to believe Minimates are almost a decade old now! I guess time really does fly. Today we are taking a look at the granddaddy wave of Star Trek Minimates: The original series 1 3" figures from 2002! I really don't have a lot to say on these guys individually, so I figured I'd group all the 3" guys into one post to make this worthwhile. But first- a little more info on these "less-mini" minimates...

Photobucket

The original Minimates from Art Asylum were based on a slightly larger scale, with figures clocking in at 3" instead of the now standard 2". While the larger size made sense for individual figure releases, the block figure concept doesn't really work when the figures are this big. The simplified detailing just looks better on the slightly smaller 2" scale.

Photobucket

Take a look at the difference in the McCoy likenesses here. Part of the reason the smaller McCoy looks so much better in his 2" version is due to improvements in Art Asylum's work over the years, but I feel part of it is due to the scale as well. Those simple features look a little ridiculous blown up like that, but might be just fine shrunk down to 2" scale.

Photobucket

It's not just the faces on these that look a little primitive either. As evidenced by the "casual" Kirk comparison above, the costume detailing is almost non-existent on these early minimates. It's weird to see how much is crammed into the little guys, while these larger guys look almost unfinished. And it's like that pretty much across the entire wave. Let's take a look at each of 'em!

Photobucket

Kirk is featured in his standard "gold" shirt, which is a no-brainer for the first release of the good captain. Kirk's likeness is just about on par with his 2" counterpart, but that's mostly because the smaller version is one of the least accurate of that scale. The fact that his delta shield isn't even painted gold (it just uses the yellow of his shirt with a stenciled outline) is a big no-no though. Kirk comes equipped with his trusty hand phaser... Oh, and before I forget, each of the 3" minimates came with an odd Art Asylum puzzle piece thing. It wasn't really a base, since there weren't any peg holes or anything; They were just weird, useless plastic puzzle pieces... So I threw them in a box somewhere and forgot about them (thus why it isn't pictured).

Photobucket

Next we have Dr. McCoy. The blue of the shirt used with both Dr. McCoy and Spock is a little on the dark side for my tastes. Other than that, Bones isn't too bad, though his likeness is a bit easier to capture due to the "character" in De Kelley's face. McCoy comes equipped with a tricorder.

Photobucket

Spock rounds out the 3 crew releases. The likeness here is pretty weak when compared to the others, with an over-reliance on Spock's distinctive eyebrows to help sell this as Spock. Mister Spock does feature something unique amongst these releases though: an interchangeable hand! It seems like every AA Spock, no matter the scale, has to come with a "Live Long and Prosper" hand. It must be in Spock's contract or something. He also comes equipped with the tricorder, just like McCoy. Let's take a minute to look at those accessories a little closer:

Photobucket

Again, we see how the detailing improved when the decision was made to shrink down the minimates. These original 3" scale accessories lack even the most basic detailing when compared to their smaller brethren.

Photobucket

To combat our three intrepid heroes, Art Asylum included a trio of dastardly villains in this initial wave. Khan here has no accessories and comes in a very odd outfit choice (as opposed to the solid red later released in the 2" line). I will say this about the larger Khan though; I actually think the face looks much more like Ricardo than it does on the smaller one. He is probably the only one of the bunch that I can say that about.

Photobucket

The Gorn is another obvious choice for an initial villain in any Trek line. I was pretty pleased with him when he first came out, but comparison with the 2" version brings out his shortcomings more than any of the others. The square blocks on the tunic, the painted-on attire, the weird yellow squares on the knees... It's like comparing the graphics on an Atari 2600 with those on a Sega Genesis. Hey, sweet analogy James! Oh... and the Gorn comes with a spike and a translator, but I dropped the translator before I took the picture. So use your imagination.

Photobucket

Finishing out the wave is the Mugatu! This one has the distinction of being the only 3" Trek minimate to not get a 2" counterpart... which is a really shame because he's probably the coolest release of the batch! What he lacks in accessories (he has none), he makes up for in cool sculpted parts. Check out those sweet back spikes!

So that's all of them... oh wait! There's this one too-

Photobucket

While not part of the initial wave, I'm grouping the "Trouble with Tribbles" Kirk in with this post too. TWT Kirk was a separate exclusive release through Figures.com. He's built on the 3" body, just like the initial wave, and comes equipped with the same silver hand phaser. He also includes a bunch of fuzzy "tribbles" (basically just little colored puff balls on a string). While there's nothing very memorable about this release, I do think his cocky grin is pretty well done.

Photobucket

And that's it for the 3" minimates. A second wave was planned that included the rest of the core crew, plus a "mirror" Kirk and a klingon... but it got the axe when the larger format was retired. With only this small grouping of figures released, there really isn't a need for most folks to pick these up. If you are interested in getting into the Trek minimate line, you're better off going with the 2" guys. The line is much more expansive, and the product is just plain better.

AA/ DST Spotlight-
Space Seed Khan &
Dress Uniform Kirk
Star Trek Minimates

Figure Names: Space Seed Khan & Dress Uniform Kirk
Manufacturer: Diamond Select Toys

Khan & Kirk were released as part of Diamond Select's third wave of Star Trek Minimates.

The Rundown: Yeah, I know...I just did a minimates spotlight day before yesterday. I didn't plan on doing another this soon, but I'm stuck at home with a sick 2 year old, so I'm limited to whatever I have pictures ready for, so you get more minimates today...so I hope you like minimates! We'll start with Kirk-

Kirk fills the "main character variant" spot in this pack. Here we get him in his dress uniform (to go along with dress uniform Spock & McCoy). Unlike some of the minimate pairings, this one actually makes sense due to Kirk wearing this uniform in "Space Seed".

It's not a Kirk you particularly need unless you're going after a complete set, but he's at least a well done variation. The likeness is pretty decent, capturing Kirk's bravado well in this form. Kirk's dress uniform is nice too, with a good amount of detailing on the chest.

And there's the real reason for picking up the pack: KHHAAAANNNNN! The greatest Star Trek villain of all, packed into a cute little blocky body! Awww...

DST chose Khan's red jumpsuit for this 'mate. The detailing is nice for what it is, but there's not much going on with a red jumpsuit to make it jump out as Khan. Thankfully, the head sells it. They really nailed the confident half-smile that Khan wore for much of the episode.

Accessories: Both Kirk and Khan comes with hand phasers. Or you can just give them both to Kirk. Khan has little need for such devices!

I'd consider this pack pretty important for a classic Trek minimate collection. Sure, you don't particularly have to own the crew in dress uniforms...but Khan is a "must-have". Makes me wish that the line would have lasted long enough to see a minimate Khan based on "Star Trek II"...

AA/ DST Spotlight- Khan
("Star Trek II The Wrath Of Khan")

Figure Name: Khan
Manufacturer: Diamond Select Toys

DST released Khan as part of it's first assortment of "Star Trek II The Wrath Of Khan" figures.

The Rundown: "Buried alive.....buried alive...." Khan is the greatest Star Trek villain of all time and I would buy just about any figure DST would release of him. This Khan from the first TWOK wave features him in perhaps his most iconic look.

Khan features the standard articulation of the DST Trek figures. All the points work pretty well and you can get a ton of great poses out of him. The hips are a bit close together for my liking, but that's a minor nitpick.

The sculpt is outstanding, capturing all the little details of Khan's costuming. These costumes were made to look as if Khan and his crew cannibalized any parts they could from the Botany Bay to clothe themselves with; I really get the feel of that with the sculpt on this figure. Plus, there's a nice dirty paint wash over the whole thing. Great job DST!

Khan's head sculpt is really amazing. It perfectly captures the older genetically engineered tyrant. I feel it is one of their best heads since... well, the TOS Wave 1 Khan from "Space Seed". Maybe it's just something about Montalban's likeness...

Accessories: Khan comes with an interchangeable hand, an adult Ceti Alpha eel, a bowl of baby eels, and a big pair of tweezers to pick 'em up with.

TWOK Khan is a fantastic figure; one no Trek figure fan should be without. If you don't have him, go get him. Now. He's pretty cheap now so there's no excuse...

AA/ DST Figure Spotlight- Khan
("Space Seed" Figure 2-Pack)

Photobucket

Figure Name: Khan
Manufacturer: Diamond Select Toys

Photobucket

This Khan was released in a "Space Seed" figure 2-pack with a "Dress Uniform" Kirk.

Photobucket

The Rundown: In my humble opinion, the more Khan, the merrier! I'll take just about any Khan variation a company could make! Playmates never gave us one inspired from his classic "Space Seed" appearance. Thankfully, the lack of classic series Khan was finally cured in the first wave of Art Asylum's Classic Star Trek figures. I figured that would be the only Khan they'd ever do... outside of an easy head switch onto Scotty for a cheap episode-inspired variation. I was pretty surprised to see Diamond Select go the extra mile with this 2-pack and do gold shirt 'dinner' Khan instead of taking the thrifty road! Of course, this was back when DST seemed to have a little more faith in the license than they do now...but I digress-

Photobucket

The figure reuses a little from the first outing, but there's enough new here to not really notice. The gold shirt is really beautifully detailed with little individual depressions to form the texture of the shirt. It's just a flat out great sculpt and the proportions are pretty much perfect.

Photobucket

The head is the same as AA's Wave 1 Khan (aside from a ponytail correction and a slightly different paint job)...and it's just as good here as it is there. Forget real scan technology- this head proves a good sculptor can beat a machine any day of the week. There's just so much of Khan's personality in this sculpt...

Photobucket

If there's anything to even slightly nitpick on the figure, it's that the shirt somewhat hinders his hip joints. It's not really a big deal though... I'd much rather have the accurate length on the shirt than have had them shorten it to make the hips work better. Oh, and thankfully it's not the rubbery material used on AA's Classic figures either, so that's another bonus.

Photobucket

Accessories: Again, Khan just comes with a phaser (assuming the other accessories are meant for Kirk). Khan doesn't need any stinking weapons though. I'm assuming the phaser is just there for him to crush.

Want to read the summary on the package?

Photobucket

So, yeah, this figure rocks. And he comes in a package with a pretty awesome Kirk variant too...which we'll tackle tomorrow.

DST/ EMCE Spotlight- Khan
(Mego Style Figure)

Photobucket

Figure Name: Khan
Manufacturer: Diamond Select & EMCE Toys

Photobucket

Khan was released through a partnership of Diamond Select and EMCE Toys as a Hastings/ Planet X exclusive. (sorry, no packaged pic)

Photobucket

The Rundown: Wha!? Who!? A NEW Mego figure! That was my reaction when I first saw pics of this guy. EMCE/ DST had just recently started reissuing the original Star Trek Mego figures when Khan was announced.... the first new 'Mego'! How does he fit in the line? GREAT, that's how!

Photobucket

The head sculpt is good, but not so accurate that it loses the "Mego charm". He looks just as if he had been produced when the original line was on shelves. Oh, and the skin tone is perfect too. Very nice!

Photobucket

The body is your standard Mego style; well-articulated with really nice body proportions. The outfit too has that Mego charm and feels allot like the material used on the original figures.

Accessories: Um, nope. None included. It would have been nice to get a phaser for him to crush at least. Oh well...

So yeah...Khan here is great and makes me really hope they do more unproduced characters in this style. I can just imagine how good a Trelane or a Harry Mudd would be!

AA/ DST Figure Spotlight- Khan

Photobucket

Figure Name: Khan
Manufacturer: Art Asylum Toys

Khan was released carded as part of the first wave of Art Asylum's Classic Star Trek figures.

Photobucket

The Rundown: Well, it took around 40 years to get a Khan figure based on his appearance from "Space Seed", but in this case, it was worth the wait-

Photobucket

I'd be hesitant to call any figure perfect, but if I did, Khan would fit the bill. This is really one of the best Trek figures ever made. The body sculpt is fantastic and really captures the tall, powerful build of Khan. Plus, no rubber shirt! That's quite a relief. Holding this figure in my hands makes me really wish the rest of the Art Asylum TOS stuff was made the same way.

Photobucket

Without a doubt, that head sculpt is some of AA's finest work. It perfectly captures a young Ricardo Montalban. Pretty much all of AA's heads are really good, but this one is great.

Photobucket

The articulation is also fantastic. He has just enough points to strike some really cool poses, but not so much that it breaks up the great body sculpt. If you don't own this figure, go buy it. Like right now. It's the quintessential classic Khan figure.

Photobucket

Accessories: Sure, he only comes with a phaser, but it's not like he even needs that. I mean, c'mon, the guy has five times your strength!
