AA/ DST Spotlight-
Star Trek Minimates
Series 1 (3")

Photobucket

Manufacturer: Art Asylum
Item Name: Star Trek Minimates Series 1 (3")

Photobucket

Art Asylum released this series of Star Trek Minimates way back in 2002. They were available in these nifty hard plastic tubes (I seem to have misplaced my Mugatu)...

Photobucket

... or on standard cardbacks. The "Trouble With Tribbles" Kirk was only available in the carded packaging. And it looks like I've managed to lose my carded McCoy as well.

Photobucket

The Rundown: Man, it's hard to believe Minimates are almost a decade old now! I guess time really does fly. Today we are taking a look at the granddaddy wave of Star Trek Minimates: The original series 1 3" figures from 2002! I really don't have a lot to say on these guys individually, so I figured I'd group all the 3" guys into one post to make this worthwhile. But first- a little more info on these "less-mini" minimates...

Photobucket

The original Minimates from Art Asylum were based on a slightly larger scale, with figures clocking in at 3" instead of the now standard 2". While the larger size made sense for individual figure releases, the block figure concept doesn't really work when the figures are this big. The simplified detailing just looks better on the slightly smaller 2" scale.

Photobucket

Take a look at the difference in the McCoy likenesses here. Part of the reason the smaller McCoy looks so much better in his 2" version is due to improvements in Art Asylum's work over the years, but I feel part of it is due to the scale as well. Those simple features look a little ridiculous blown up like that, but might be just fine shrunk down to 2" scale.

Photobucket

It's not just the faces on these that look a little primitive either. As evidenced by the "casual" Kirk comparison above, the costume detailing is almost non-existent on these early minimates. It's weird to see how much is crammed into the little guys, while these larger guys look almost unfinished. And it's like that pretty much across the entire wave. Let's take a look at each of 'em!

Photobucket

Kirk is featured in his standard "gold" shirt, which is a no-brainer for the first release of the good captain. Kirk's likeness is just about on par with his 2" counterpart, but that's mostly because the smaller version is one of the least accurate of that scale. The fact that his delta shield isn't even painted gold (it just uses the yellow of his shirt with a stenciled outline) is a big no-no though. Kirk comes equipped with his trusty hand phaser... Oh, and before I forget, each of the 3" minimates came with an odd Art Asylum puzzle piece thing. It wasn't really a base, since there weren't any peg holes or anything; They were just weird, useless plastic puzzle pieces... So I threw them in a box somewhere and forgot about them (thus why it isn't pictured).

Photobucket

Next we have Dr. McCoy. The blue of the shirt used with both Dr. McCoy and Spock is a little on the dark side for my tastes. Other than that, Bones isn't too bad, though his likeness is a bit easier to capture due to the "character" in De Kelley's face. McCoy comes equipped with a tricorder.

Photobucket

Spock rounds out the 3 crew releases. The likeness here is pretty weak when compared to the others, with an over-reliance on Spock's distinctive eyebrows to help sell this as Spock. Mister Spock does feature something unique amongst these releases though: an interchangeable hand! It seems like every AA Spock, no matter the scale, has to come with a "Live Long and Prosper" hand. It must be in Spock's contract or something. He also comes equipped with the tricorder, just like McCoy. Let's take a minute to look at those accessories a little closer:

Photobucket

Again, we see how the detailing improved when the decision was made to shrink down the minimates. These original 3" scale accessories lack even the most basic detailing when compared to their smaller brethren.

Photobucket

To combat our three intrepid heroes, Art Asylum included a trio of dastardly villains in this initial wave. Khan here has no accessories and comes in a very odd outfit choice (as opposed to the solid red later released in the 2" line). I will say this about the larger Khan though; I actually think the face looks much more like Ricardo than it does on the smaller one. He is probably the only one of the bunch that I can say that about.

Photobucket

The Gorn is another obvious choice for an initial villain in any Trek line. I was pretty pleased with him when he first came out, but comparison with the 2" version brings out his shortcomings more than any of the others. The square blocks on the tunic, the painted-on attire, the weird yellow squares on the knees... It's like comparing the graphics on an Atari 2600 with those on a Sega Genesis. Hey, sweet analogy James! Oh... and the Gorn comes with a spike and a translator, but I dropped the translator before I took the picture. So use your imagination.

Photobucket

Finishing out the wave is the Mugatu! This one has the distinction of being the only 3" Trek minimate to not get a 2" counterpart... which is a really shame because he's probably the coolest release of the batch! What he lacks in accessories (he has none), he makes up for in cool sculpted parts. Check out those sweet back spikes!

So that's all of them... oh wait! There's this one too-

Photobucket

While not part of the initial wave, I'm grouping the "Trouble with Tribbles" Kirk in with this post too. TWT Kirk was a separate exclusive release through Figures.com. He's built on the 3" body, just like the initial wave, and comes equipped with the same silver hand phaser. He also includes a bunch of fuzzy "tribbles" (basically just little colored puff balls on a string). While there's nothing very memorable about this release, I do think his cocky grin is pretty well done.

Photobucket

And that's it for the 3" minimates. A second wave was planned that included the rest of the core crew, plus a "mirror" Kirk and a klingon... but it got the axe when the larger format was retired. With only this small grouping of figures released, there really isn't a need for most folks to pick these up. If you are interested in getting into the Trek minimate line, you're better off going with the 2" guys. The line is much more expansive, and the product is just plain better.

AA/ DST Spotlight-
Sick Bay Dr. McCoy
& Nurse Chapel
Star Trek Minimates

Photobucket

Figure Names: Sick Bay Dr. McCoy & Nurse Chapel
Manufacturer: Diamond Select Toys

Photobucket

Bones & Chapel were released as part of Diamond Select's fourth wave of Star Trek Minimates.

Photobucket

The Rundown: It's Minimate Madness Monday! Oh wait... it's Tuesday. It's Tiny TOS Tots Tuesday! Today we'll take a look at the fourth wave release of the good doctor (sporting some short sleeve action) and his helpful nurse Chapel!

Photobucket

Let's start with McCoy- Since they'd already done a standard McCoy, doing the short sleeve version makes sense. The execution is nice, with DST even paying attention to the changes in the collar area.

Photobucket

The minimate McCoy head is really nice, perfectly capturing the look of Bones in this style. It's sometimes tough to make these likenesses work, but you can plainly see who this one is meant to be. Oh, and check out the arm hair! Some fans complain that they went a little overboard on the hair, but go back and watch some of those original episodes and you can see that Mr. Kelley had him some furry forearms!

Photobucket

Next up, we have Nurse Chapel. Right now, this is the only DST-produced Chapel figure made. That to me is just nonsense. Why a character like Chapel never made it into the regular figure line is just ludicrous. But I digress...

Photobucket

Chapel is pretty much your standard fare, with nothing to really write home about here. The hair sculpt is nice, and the outfit is well-painted, but the likeness isn't distinct at all. It seems to be a little harder for DST to capture female likenesses over male ones, what with the lack of lines in the face to give them "character". Still, it's Chapel so if you are collecting the MM line, she's a necessary pick-up.

Photobucket

Accessories: This set is pretty loaded, with 2 tricorders, 2 communicators, and a padd! I'm especially fond of the tricorder, though it does fall off the figure a little too easily.

Photobucket

If you're not a fan of the minimate style, there's probably nothing I can say to entice you to buy this one. The figures are fun, and make for cool additions to any work desk, but if you are just starting out, there are other "cooler" sets that make more sense as an initial buy. If you have already started in on the line though, this one's a solid purchase even if you already own McCoy, due to the amount of accessories and the fact that you get Chapel. One can never have enough Chapel figures!

AA/ DST Spotlight-
Space Seed Khan &
Dress Uniform Kirk
Star Trek Minimates

Figure Names: Space Seed Khan & Dress Uniform Kirk
Manufacturer: Diamond Select Toys

Khan & Kirk were released as part of Diamond Select's third wave of Star Trek Minimates.

The Rundown: Yeah, I know...I just did a minimates spotlight day before yesterday. I didn't plan on doing another this soon, but I'm stuck at home with a sick 2 year old, so I'm limited to whatever I have pictures ready for, so you get more minimates today...so I hope you like minimates! We'll start with Kirk-

Kirk fills the "main character variant" spot in this pack. Here we get him in his dress uniform (to go along with dress uniform Spock & McCoy). Unlike some of the minimate pairings, this one actually makes sense due to Kirk wearing this uniform in "Space Seed".

It's not a Kirk you particularly need unless you're going after a complete set, but he's at least a well done variation. The likeness is pretty decent, capturing Kirk's bravado well in this form. Kirk's dress uniform is nice too, with a good amount of detailing on the chest.

And there's the real reason for picking up the pack: KHHAAAANNNNN! The greatest Star Trek villain of all, packed into a cute little blocky body! Awww...

DST chose Khan's red jumpsuit for this 'mate. The detailing is nice for what it is, but there's not much going on with a red jumpsuit to make it jump out as Khan. Thankfully, the head sells it. They really nailed the confident half-smile that Khan wore for much of the episode.

Accessories: Both Kirk and Khan comes with hand phasers. Or you can just give them both to Kirk. Khan has little need for such devices!

I'd consider this pack pretty important for a classic Trek minimate collection. Sure, you don't particularly have to own the crew in dress uniforms...but Khan is a "must-have". Makes me wish that the line would have lasted long enough to see a minimate Khan based on "Star Trek II"...

AA/ DST Spotlight-
Commander Decker & Ilia Probe
Star Trek Minimates

Figure Names: Commander Decker & Ilia Probe
Manufacturer: Diamond Select Toys

Decker & Ilia were released as part of Diamond Select's fifth wave of Star Trek Minimates.

The Rundown: Yay! "The Motion Picture" style minimates! Unfortunately, these are the only 2 minimates inspired by TMP. I would have loved to get the whole crew...but if I could only have 2, Decker and Ilia do make the most sense.

Decker looks really good. The likeness is one of the strongest in the minimate line. It actually looks like Stephen Collins in the face, and the hair is just about perfect. DST chose the standard blue/gray uniform for Decker. The outfit is pretty detailed for a minimate, with the waist piece being a highlight.

The nice thing about Decker is that he makes a good base for making other TMP styled male crew members. You can can get decent TMP style Kirk, Spock, and Scott minimates out of him with just simple head switches.

Ah, but if you do pick up extras for customizing you're going to be stuck with a bunch of Ilias. Since DST chose the probe version, there's not going to be much you can do with her in the way of customs.

I can't fault DST for choosing this outfit over the standard uniform though. The probe version is the more iconic look of the character. DST did a fine job of capturing the look, with individual sculpts for the collar and lower shirt. The head is sharp too, replicating the vacant stare seen in the movie nicely.

Accessories: The pack only includes 1 accessory- a phaser for Decker. Since Ilia Probe didn't really have anything it makes sense, but I would have loved them to throw in maybe a tricorder or something extra for Decker.

Minimates are an acquired taste to begin with, but you have to couple that with being a TMP fan to make this one worth it. With this being the only TMP style minimates out there, you could easily skip it and never miss having it.It is one of the nicer minimate efforts though, so you may want to give it a shot if you can get it on the cheap.

AA/ DST Spotlight-
Ambassador Sarek & Spock
(Dress Uniform/ "Spock's Brain")
Star Trek Minimates

Figure Names: Ambassador Sarek & Spock (Dress Uniform/ "Spock's Brain")
Manufacturer: Diamond Select Toys

Sarek & Spock were released as part of Diamond Select's third wave of Star Trek Minimates. The pack was available with either the standard Dress Uniform Spock...

...or with the variant Spock from "Spock's Brain"!

The Rundown: Hey, it's a three-for-one spotlight today! With every wave of their Star Trek Minimates, DST packed in a one-per-case variant of one of the standard packs. Wave three's variation was on the standard Ambassador Sarek & Dress Uniform Spock pack, changing out that Spock with a version from "Spock's Brain". Let's look at 'em!

Sarek is the same in both packs. He's your unique "essential" character, while Spock fills the role of your "non-essential" variation character. Sarek is based on his attire from the beginning of the episode "Journey To Babel", his one and only original series appearance.

Sarek's a good minimate, but not a great one. Since we're talking about minimate likenesses, you can't judge this too harshly, but this one doesn't seem to capture him as well as some of the other minimates do their counterparts. Plus, the outfit they chose here is somewhat plain. I really wish they'd have gone with the shiny gold shirt from the buffet scene instead. Oh well...

The standard version of the pack features Spock in his dress uniform to go along with wave one's dress McCoy and wave three's dress Kirk. The pairing makes sense here since Spock wore this outfit in "Journey To Babel".

Dress Spock fares a bit better than Sarek. The head looks like Spock, and the dress uniform details are well done. Oh, and I forgot to mention that Sarek comes with no accessories, while Spock at least comes with your standard Starfleet gear.

And here's your one-per-case variant: "Spock's Brain" Spock! Straight from the unanimously panned episode comes Spock with his robot head gear. The pairing with Sarek makes no sense here, but it's a variant so *ahem* logic goes right out the window.

"Spock's Brain" is one of my guilty pleasures, so I was actually really excited to get this pack. The 'mate is well-done, with the headgear being the highlight. Oh, and if you absolutely can't stand "Spock's Brain", you can always switch out the head for a "This Side Of Paradise" version.

Accessories: "Spock's Brain" Spock comes with his little remote (which is awesome) and his Vulcan lute (which doesn't make much sense, but is still really cool). The Dress Uniform Spock comes with a phaser, communicator, and a Vulcan salute hand. None of the accessories seem to be for Sarek, but I guess you could give him the hand...

So is it worth going after both packs? For me, yes, but that's because I'm crazy and I actually enjoy "Spock's Brain". Normal people can probably just call it a day with the standard pack. The variant does come with the Vulcan lute, which is way cool, but if you go after both, then you're stuck with an extra Sarek. Ah, the pitfalls of variants...
