AA/ DST Spotlight- Commander Spock
(Star Trek: The Motion Picture)

Figure Name: Commander Spock
Manufacturer: Diamond Select Toys

Commander Spock (TMP) was released in a carded 2-pack with Admiral Kirk and...

...in a Toys R Us Exclusive 2-pack with the gray-suited Captain Kirk. Both the Spocks are the same.

The Rundown: I personally love the TMP style uniforms, so the more figures we get in this style the happier I am. We got some great figures (in 2 different scales) from Mego, a handful from Playmates, and sadly very little from AA/ DST. Spock here is only 1 of 2 characters produced by DST in this style of uniform.

Much of the body is a reuse from existing parts, but what's new is quite good. DST sculpted in all the little uniform details on the chest like the lines of the uniform and the little belt buckle. Spock's uniform differs from the standard gray by adding a raised collar (which makes custom head-switching a little tougher using his body).

Like I said, there is some body parts reuse going on here. I believe Spock's arms are a reuse of the TNG Data arms. That's not too big of a deal, since it's just a plain sleeved arm sculpt, but I do wish they had not used the closed fist hand. It's annoying that he can only use one hand, and the clenched fist doesn't really go with Spock's character very well.

The other reuse is a bit more of a problem. The Data legs reused here have the same wonky leg syndrome of that release. One of the legs bows in towards the other, giving the figure a constant "I'm gonna fall over!" look. It's not quite as bad here as it was on Data, but it is still noticeable.

The Spock head is really quite good and perfectly captures the aging Nimoy. There's some debate as to if this is a new sculpt or just a reused TWOK version. I kinda feel like it's the TWOK head- just with a much improved paint job.

Accessories: Both Spock and Kirk in these 2-packs come with their own TMP-style Phaser and wrist communicator. The wrist communicator fits the figure very well and is one of my fav DST accessories.

Looking back over all this, it may seem like I'm kinda dogging the figure. I really don't want to come across like that...sure, it has some issues, but it really is a great figure and one I'm very happy to have! I highly recommend either pack!

Later in the week we'll take a look at Kirk...
